Today I am going to talk about which homeschool method I use & how or why did you chose?
When I first choose to homeschool my oldest two I had two criteria for homeschooling curriculum, one was it had to be close to free as possible. We could not afford homeschooling curriculum for both children like others had gone with. The second criteria was curriculum that reflected Godly values. So at that time I had found out about Old Fashioned Education. I loved it because it mostly used living books and was free. Now because I am on the Homeschool Review Crew, I get to review many different curriculum.
I happen to like using living books, where I can read quality books to the children. But I like textbooks too-as long as they reflect my religious view. My curriculum has been a mix lately and I love it. I want books that give them values of the olden days when the kids respected their parents, where everyone was nice to each other, how togetherness was celebrated, and how God was talked about.
I still don’t understand all the methods and names for the different types of curriculum but I choose what is best for my family and sometimes it’s one way and sometimes it’s a mix. It’s all depends on the year.
You can learn more about the different types HERE.
How do you choose your curriculum? What method do you use?

I started out with a more Charlotte Mason approach, which is what yours sounds like with the “living books”. I used Ambleside Online for a couple of years, which is also free. Then, we moved more into a mix of whatever books were working for us at the time – ones we’d been using and liked, so we kept on with the next level. Some of the books I chose because I liked what I saw while browsing at the local homeschool used curriculum sales. Some things we use now are things I reviewed and loved. In the last couple of years we have moved more toward a Classical approach, though not hard-core. We still use stuff that we know and love, but have tried out a Classical Connections group this year. I’m not sure that we’ll continue with the CC group next fall, but I plan to continue on with a more Classical approach with my older two. I’m just kind of going with the flow with my 3 year old, but plan to start more formal lessons later this spring or summer – whenever I feel like she’s really ready for it.
